Over 60% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions every year. Whether we want to eat less sugar, lose weight, exercise or read instead of watching television, few of us find ourselves in the 8% of people that actually succeed. Life gets in the way. Kids get sick, the spouse has to work late, and the latest episode of The Walking Dead is nothing without ice cream.

It hurts to break promises, even if the promises that we make are only to the person in the mirror. Everybody wonders if there are easy resolutions that require little work and can yield improvements from day-to-day.  Check out these five resolutions – and don’t be surprised to find that you can actually keep them!

1. Build Health: Detox by drinking more water.

The essential element to life is water, and most people don’t drink enough. Forget expensive cleansing systems with extracts and organics. As long as you have a functioning liver and functioning kidneys, the flushing power of water is the best thing to maintain good skin, good organ function and good health. Doctors recommend eight eight-ounce glasses of fluid per day. Consider what you drink, and supplement it with water. Discomfort from extra water intake generally subsides within a few days.

2. Build wealth: Contribute to your 401(k)

If your company offers a 401(k) retirement plan, contribute! Women, especially, often feel unempowered financially compared to their male counterparts. Knowing that you have savings for tomorrow helps you think more clearly about today. How much should you invest? Many companies match your contributions dollar-for-dollar or fifty-cents-on-the-dollar up to a certain percentage of your income. Find out what your company offers, and make the most of it. It’s free money that you’re leaving on the table, and it can give you a generous tax break.

3. Look your best: Reach for that bottle of conditioner in the shower!

Just as your body needs hydration, so, too does your hair. Most people, however, don’t bother with the extra step of conditioning after every shampoo. As a result, hair can look dull and coarse. Gentlemen, condition that beard! It’s not immune from the laws of hair. It’s no secret that various types of ethnic hair, too, need conditioning, but often with specialized conditioners and heat. Consult your stylist. No matter who you are, do not be the person in the room with hair that is breaking in half!

4. Build spiritual well-being: Practice Mindfulness and enjoy the rituals that you have already established.

The practice of mindfulness involves paying attention to your thoughts and feelings, without judging yourself or feeling like a bad person. Feel the present emotionally, physically and spiritually, and do not dwell on the past or the future. Often, the best time to do this is during the small rituals of life – over the first cup of coffee every morning, or when you let the dog out for the last time at night. You may be amazed at how much better you sleep at night or concentrate on your tasks at work.

5. Build self-esteem: Say what you mean, and find more ways to say “yes.”

We tend to avoid conflict, especially in the workplace, but being consistent between your thoughts and your words makes you honest, trustworthy, and more confident. Don’t be mean or aggressive. Practice saying “no” if you feel you’re being taken advantage of, but in a world that feels like everybody says “no,” also practice saying “yes.” Think before you speak. Do you remember the last person who told you “no?” How about the last person who said “yes?” Which do you want to be? If there’s no good reason to refuse, answering in the affirmative will make you helpful and surprisingly memorable, and open new doors. Get out there and bravely say “yes” in the new year!

These resolutions are worth writing down. Put them on your fridge. Remember them from time to time. Most importantly, don’t be afraid if you cannot do them every day – the best part about the following five is that you can pick them up where you left off if vacation or a double-shift interferes. Even the most stalwart resolutioners are not “on” 100% of the time. Don’t punish yourself – you’re already ahead of people who make no resolutions at all. Do these five things, and take control of 2017!
