San Diego Water News October 2015

San Diego is still in a drought and that means water is in the news quite a bit! Below, we highlight the San Diego water round up for October 2015!

Dyeing the Ocean

If you’re a frequent beachgoer, you may often be frustrated when your favorite beaches are closed due to contamination far down the coast. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is dying the water pink to help figure out what really happens with contamination. Some contaminates can’t be seen by the naked eye and this study is helping determine patterns and how spills react to the ebb and flow of the tide. It might just be a coincidence that the dye color coincides with the color of breast cancer awareness month.

El Nino No Help for Drought

California depends on its snowpack to get through periods of intense drought. El Nino is bringing in more rain instead of snow and this is bad news for the snowpack which could mean more drought issues for San Diego. While the moisture will help in the short term, the higher temperatures and rainfall will have longer term impacts on the drought situation in San Diego and other parts of California. Drought conditions continue to be in effect all over the state and residents should continue their water conservation efforts.

Conservation Efforts Are Working!

The San Diego Water Authority is reporting citizens have reduced their water usage by 26 percent compared to two years ago. This means education and conservation efforts are working! Continuing efforts to conserve natural resources like building water smart properties, installing low flow faucets and toilets, and cutting down on watering outside help to keep water consumption to minimum levels. Drink Water, Feel Better

Proper hydration is critical to overall health! Some people wonder why they feel tired or sluggish or why they can’t seem to get motivated to go to the gym. We say drink water, feel better!

Hydrated Muscles are Happy Muscles

Your muscles work hard to get you through everyday life. Hydrated muscles are more fluid and elastic meaning you become less prone to injury, even if you don’t take precautions like regular stretching. If you’re an athlete or even moderately active, you need to replenish the water lost during high intensity activities to ensure your body stays healthy. Dehydration can undo some of the hard work you’ve done during your workout since your muscles use protein and water to rebuild the small tears created in your muscles.

Drink Water and Aid Digestion

Drinking enough water aids in digestion which can definitely help you feel better. If you feel very full or sluggish after a meal and that feeling persists long after you’ve put down your fork, consider incorporating more water into your dining experience before and during eating. If you drink water before a meal can help you feel fuller so you consume less calories during your actual meal. Taking sips of water slows down your eating speed and helps aid in digestion once your food makes its way to your intestinal tract.

Mid-Afternoon Energy

Think twice before reaching for a cup of coffee or candy bar in the afternoon when your energy level dips. Caffeine headaches and dependency can cause a vicious cycle. If you are dehydrated, your energy drops and you may experience headaches. Reach for a tall glass of water instead and your body will thank you! Need tips on how to consume more water? Check out 3 Tips for Consuming More Water.

Conclusion

Take a water challenge and drink more water to feel better!

San Diego Water Round Up September 2015

With a worrisome drought and summer coming to a close, water is still on many citizens’ minds. While students head back to school water costs, education, and final beach days are front and center. See below for the San Diego Water Round Up for September 2015.

Costs Continue to Rise with San Diego Water

Water rates are on the rise, and there’s no end in sight. Some cost cutting measures have been taken over the years to keep costs to consumers down but there comes a time when rates simply must go up of the Water Authority will go out of business. Many factors contribute to rising water costs including maintenance, new technology, and staff salaries.

San Diego Water Education and Conservation

Children are our future and they also need to learn how to conserve water for their future and beyond. San Diego County students are learning about water conservation through a fun musical entitled “H2O, Where Did It Go?” Kids learn about turning off water when not in use, like when brushing their teeth. San Diego County sponsored the Los Angeles based theatre company Shows That Teach to bring the ideas of water conversation to the county’s youngest residents.

Shark Watch in San Diego Water

Warmer weather means warmer water and warmer water near the coast means sharks are venturing further toward the beach than ever before. A hammerhead shark was spotted in water off La Jolla Beach which life guards agree is extremely out of the ordinary. While hammerheads are generally considered mild-mannered sharks, any shark sighting is cause for concern. Any shark sightings should be mentioned to on-duty life guards with as much detail as possible. Determining the type of shark is critical to figuring out how much of a threat the shark may be to the general public.

Conclusion

New Straw for Las Vegas Water from Lake Mead

A project that has been in the works for over seven years has reached an exciting, and critical, milestone. The new straw constructed for Lake Mead has reached a point where it can be filled. The process will be slow and gradual to ensure the structure is sound, but it will begin in the very near future. This project has been considered insurance against the ever looming drought fears for the Las Vegas Valley. The project has touted a cost to the water authority of over $817 million. Considering 90% of drinking water is processed in from Lake Mead for Las Vegas valley residents, it was a much needed expenditure. We should be seeing a finalization to this project within the next couple of months. If you’re like many of our Silver Springs Water clients, your drinking water however is already conveniently delivered to your home or office.

Drinking Water and Cancer

Drinking Water and Cancer is a rising and notable concern. Most all chemicals related to humans will end up in our water supply. This is why organizations such as the Las Vegas Valley Water District are adamant about maintaining a healthy water supply. Carcinogens found in drinking water generally come from contaminants such as arsenic, asbestos, radon, lead, chlorination, and uranium to name a few. The LVVW District regulate for 91 contaminants in tap water under ‘primary standards’ set by the EPA, and 50 unregulated contaminants.

Drinking Water and Cancer Causing Contaminants

One of the most concerning drinking water contaminants withe regard to cancer, is that of arsenic. Arsenic is linked to cancers of the kidneys, bladder, lungs and liver. The by-product of drinking water treatment by chlorination, also causes a great drinking water cancer risk. Chlorination by-products have been attributed to 5k-8k cases of rectal cancer in the United States each year. Fluoridation of water has been in question recently, but little has been proven to show it’s connection to cancer.

Cucumber Mint

Also called spa water, cucumber mint water is refreshing and light and will make you feel like you’re at a five star spa. Be sure to thoroughly wash your cucumber since a lot of commercially sold cucumber has a thin layer of wax on the outside that is safe but could affect the taste of your water. Use fresh cucumber slices and mint leaves to serve this water to keep it looking as pretty as possible. The infused water will stay fresh in the fridge up to 3 days.

Strawberry Lemon

With a nod to strawberry lemonade, this water infusion recipe is summery and cool to enjoy on a hot day. You can use fresh or frozen strawberries for this, depending on whether or not they are in season. If strawberries aren’t your favorite, you can use any type of berry for this infusion; blackberries or raspberries make an interesting concoction. Lemon makes it tart and fresh.

Grapefruit

Zesty, spicy, and a uniquely flavored citrus means grapefruit infused water will give an edge to your normal water routine. Lemon is a pretty typical water infusion but grapefruit is a fun twist on the original.

Pineapple Orange

This tropical blend is sweet and filled with citrus flavoring. Orange infusions add a little Vitamin C to your water as well as a delicious twist on plain water. Pineapple is unusual and very flavorful for water infusions.

Basil Lemon

This water infusion not only tastes amazing it also smells incredible. Smash the basil a little before putting it in water to release the oils and flavor contained in the leaves. Always clean your lemons before using them for infusions.

Conclusion

We absolutely need more effective ways to monitor our drinking water and cancer. Research continues, but we must remain proactive about our health and our water consumption. Not only that, fun and new ways to infuse new tasteful flavors to your water without adding all the calories.
